* Who is watching Penny Dreadful?!?!?! We NEED to talk about this. I think this show is SUPERB. The writing is nothing short of astonishing, inspirational, thought-provoking. The show is dark dark dark, and yet it's shot through with all this promise of light. Not actual light, mind you, but the promise of it. And that lends it a tantalizing humanness, despite its monsters. Now we KNOW why they cast Rory Kinnear, don't we? Flawless and a joy to watch work. Green is absolutely beyond the beyonds in her work on this show, but now, to see these two formidable talents locked in the same padded room....welp....TV doesn't get any better than this. I really liken Penny Dreadful to Deadwood and to Hannibal. All of these shows are gorgeous to watch, filled with truly great actors, and dialogue that is intellectual, dangerous, and a feast for the mind.

Let's discuss in comments! I have questions! I have theories! I have doubts! But most of all I have deep deep uncomfortable love for this show!

My main concern/question/confusion is the twinship of Lucifer and Dracula. I cannot conceive of any situation in which I would accept this as plausible.

Lucifer is THE fallen angel. Dracula is a cursed soul....I'm not seeing the parallel there at all. Dracula seems so small beside Lucifer. Pedestrian to Lucifer's deeply flawed spirituality.

I am having trouble with this, too. It feels too much like they needed to shoehorn Dracula in to her past and this was simply a solution. It made no sense to me that Lucifer would cower before Dracula or that they would be equals. I also do not like the shift in what vampires are from season one to now. I liked the monstrous Vampires and can even get behind Dracula shape shifting and being more complex, but it feels too much to have him take faces and appear to her exactly the way Lucifer has. It is an odd dynamic.

The episode was brilliant though and YES. Rory, goodness.

I'm ok with the Lily storyline but that bloody threesome made me laugh it was so... much. I have a soft spot for Frankenstein and I like the addition Dr. Jeckyll. He's beautiful and it feels appropriately pulpy.

I don't love Ethan's story yet because it feels too disjointed. I like the Native American companion but I don't like how he feels like a Sembene replacement. :(

Thank goodness! Yes, yes, and yes!

And I was so excited in S1 when we got glimpses of the vampires. Reminiscent of the I Am Legend monsters. They were glorious! I still like the beggar boy vampires...but am still not sure how I feel about Sweet. I don't mind Dracula manifesting as Sweet...although no one can ever come close to Oldman's prince....but I am confused about his strange manner of deception. I LIKE Sweet. How can you not? He seems so sincere and so...injured. But how is that vampirish?

Lucifer is not twinable. That should just be like a law or something. And he certainly shouldn't be cowering in the corner because of a lesser demon! I hope Logan...justifies this at some point. So, who loves Vanessa? Lucifer or Dracula?? And is Mina Doctor Sweet's dead wife???

Anywho. I'm not happy with that but happy we got this episode out of it. Just astonishing work. The seduction scene blew my mind and made the blood soaked threesome that much more cartoonish. Green and Kinnear should tour the world as a two-actor show and just perform random scenes with rambling lines of dialogue and physical confrontation....

Dr. Jeckyll!!! Save my beloved junkie Doctor Frankenstein, please someone save that boy!

I like Ethan and the witch (she is so NOT Hecate in my eyes) in the desert. There's something out of place about it and I like that disjointedness.

Mmmm...I hadn't considerd Sembene=Kaetenay=token. Ugh. I think...you're right.

Also, I can't see Carmago without wondering why someone hasn't cast him as The Night Stalker already.

Yes, I don't get Sweet especially in light of this episode! That was Dracula's attempt to woo her in the cell and now he is trying another tack?? I did feel like they did the Dracula story with Mina, but that was a different vampire? Lucifer's love of Vanessa seemed so much bigger. I feel like Sweet should be something... else.

Yes, the wild west witch *is* odd enough to be interesting. I'm glad they don't seem to be going towards romance with those two.
The contrast between the England and America shots is gorgeous, either way.

I enjoy PD even though I think that season 2 was a step down and, as much as I've been loving this season, there are flaws and some silly stuff in the writing (in terms of logistics mostly), but the actors are great, indeed and I like the new characters.

I haven't seen the latest episode yet, though.

And Timothy Dalton is just too handsome for words! :- )

I struggled with S2, as well. I thought it was just overly dark and satanic...with no truly compelling reason for embracing that. BUT, the cutwife episodes were truly flawless and can be pulled out as stand alone pieces. The witch arc needed rewriting and more purposeful direction.

I don't care for the Dorian/Lily arc but I'm willing to accept it. But I think it's the weakest writing, especially in terms of dialogue and philosophy.

This season does have some stumbles. But I think Ethan's arc is actually beginning to come together. And the witch in the Wild West is more interesting than the witch in London.

But the real gem is this week's epi. When will you get a chance to watch it??? Rory and Eva...omfg. Two British powerhouses IGNITING.

Yeah Dorian's stroyline has never really worked.

I've been liking the new pairs so far (Viktor and Jekyll; Malcolm and his new Apache buddy; Vanessa/Sweet), and I agree that Hecate is much better this year, in the Wild West with Ethan.

Okay, I'm going to watch the episode now!!!!

Hey Eva Green is French! :- P

She is???? I'm so not a celebrity person. That's an amazing fact! She has that accent down pat. But even Carmago is doing a good job with his...so....I need to find out more about Green, she's just the most gorgeous creature on earth and I'm awed by her acting talent and skill.

I'm liking the new pairs, too! Very curious to see where Malcom's story is going...it certainly seems as though he needs to make restitution at some point for his "sins".

I can't discuss too much or read comments, because we're very behind (Kira and I watched -- and loved -- Season One, but had been saving Season Two for when we could watch it together.)

Now that she's home from school, we're planning on binge-watching to catch up!

Catch up!!!! I think Season 2 will appeal to you. I'll be very curious to hear your thoughts!

So, what next for Ms. Kira?

I've been DYING to watch it -- Kira and I love sharing excellent shows, and we have a tradition of saving them up for her time at home :)

(BTW, if you've never checked out "Elementary," it is extraordinary! So much change and character development happens over the course of the show, and I think you'd grow to love Jonny Lee Miller's prickly, damaged, brilliant Sherlock, and Lucy Liu's Watson is one of the most interesting and well-written female characters on TV right now.)

Kira is going to be studying for and taking the GRE this summer -- the results are good for 5 years, and her plan is to pass the test, work for 2-4 years, and then consider grad school.

And she has planned a trip to Amsterdam at the end of July, to visit friends there and to see her long-distance (Poland), longterm partner.

She's been saving for a year and a half for this, and I'm happy for her to have the opportunity -- if anyone has earned a vacation, it's Kira! :)

She's going to be putting in job applications after the trip -- the Dallas branch of the EPA is one of the places that she'll be applying.

*fingers crossed for Good Things and cooperative health*

I think I tried an ep last year. I was confused.

Saw about half, maybe a bit more, of last night's episode. Don't know if it's the one you saw, and since I don't know any of the characters' names...a woman in a padded room is tended to by a man who seems kind and caring, except for a couple of bits when she sees him as some one/thing else. I turned the channel on to watch something else, and I was absolutely riveted. Couldn't take my eyes off the screen.

Forget about the acting, what I saw transcended acting.

As to Dracula being a lost soul...not up on the mythology of this show, but Angel always referred to himself as a demon. Possession and all that. Or was that Spike?

Seriously astounding acting!

THAT is the epi!!! It was...I still don't know. I cried, I cheered, I was so moved. Riveted is the absolutely correct word. Even D who sleeps through ALL THE TV couldn't shut his eyes!

I would rec this except for the satanic S2 which had me....questioning my loyalty to the show. A bit too dark for me. (My Catholic upbringing makes me incredibly gun shy of Satan...and anything that appears worshipful. *shudder*) But The Creature who you saw...is Frankenstein's monster and the actor is just hitting it out of the park. What I really like, though, is the dialogue.

And yes...demon. I get that. Dracula must be a demon. But Lucifer? He is so much more than that....the twinship isn't working for me on a theological level.

What are you watching these days, M?

So is the Patty Lapoint (sp) character Frankenstein? I had no clue. Vanessa is her creature, and the orderly is her Egor? I've set pvr to record the series. Can't catch-up, unless I can convince Netflix to pick it up. :-)

I'm with you totally re: the whole satanic thing. I would have dropped the series at that point.

I did see a bit of the Dorian Gray thread, but as I said there was so much going on--it seemed to be a ball, or maybe a party. Was Vanessa there? It was so confusing. I think with something like that you have to see it from the beginning to understand what's going on. Or maybe I can just focus on this season--from this point.

I have had migraines for the past few days. Low barometric pressure! Didn't figure it out till yesterday. The tv is on when I am up, but not really watching anything. Can't get through S6 of Dexter.

Mostly playing stupid games: SimCity! Really stimulating stuff. :-(

So, next time this ep of PD comes on I will see it from the beginning. :-)

Edit:

So reading through your comments I realized I watched most of the past season of Elementary, a series I thought I would hate, but find I enjoy very much. It's an easy series to watch, entertaining, but not much of a drain on the brain, or the energy. Lucy Lu is delightful, a joy to watch. Also trying to watch The Night Manager, but VOD won't put up ep five. Finale was tonight. Recorded it to watch after I watch ep five.

EEEE - such great commentary, G! I'll have to check out your post. Great minds - yes! That epi just knocked it out of the park. I'm still stunned at how moving it was.

Patti is a treasure and brings a lovely sense of the crone to her work. She is so understated.

The Mummy?!?!?! THAT would be amazing! I hadn't thought of that in relation to the Egyptian mythos...but yes, hearkening back to S1. I hope we return to that aspect.

Where did you read that??? I have never heard such a thing. I can't recall any sort of biblical mythos...Is Vanessa going to be Lilith then?

And I would have no issue with Lucifer being twinned with other non-Judeo-Christian "devils". That would be intense. I just haven't heard this Dracula theory.

What an impressive theory about Dorian! I would not be surprised if all of these characters are seriously tied together in some way or another.

Which brings us to Lily who seems to be Lilith, the name, the created creature who turns to evil....the first woman.

So many theories. This show really is brain food!

I'm going to see if PD is on Netflix. I adore psychological thrillers and I'm always looking for something provoking to get into.

Do you watch American Horror Story? I missed all last season because of my work schedule :p

This show is so dark and so literary. I hope you can find it! I watched S1 and S3 of AHS. Skipped S2 because I really don't like witchy arcs, and S4 was just downright disgusting and brutal, imo. But the two seasons I watched were amazing!

Did you watch Hannibal? I think that's probably the greatest televised psychological thriller out there. It's very nearly flawless. And the dialogue!!

What else would you put on this list?
