Two entertainment fails in one week! One movie, one book.

Annihilation was horrible. Beyond bad. Grimace worthy. I did read and love the trilogy so I know that's the problem because D, who has not read a word of the Southern Reach, thought the film was semi-successful. Semi because half-way through it becomes a different movie entirely. But wow, what a complete disappointment. The books are so so good, gorgeously conceived and beautifully written. Thought-provoking soft sci-fi. There's no reason why they couldn't just craft a screenplay from the first book and film it. They almost did just that until....halfway through. Read the trilogy if you want literary, thoughtful sci-fi. My copies are bookmarked and highlighted throughout. So many amazing lines.

And speaking of amazing lines, My Absolute Darling has them in clusters and groves, but the book is a dismal terrible failure. I've had this one on my wishlist for a long time now. It's been a "dark" media favourite and I wanted it to be something worthwhile. It is and yet it definitively is not. Right now the ebook is $1.99, and I do think it's a worthwhile read for 2/3rds of the way despite or inspite of its grotesque wrongness, but the ending is just bad regardless of the ridiculousness of it, the first person shooterness of it, the implausability of it. This writer, I hope, is meant for bigger better things. This debut novel is not those things. He can write. He can broadly draw character, which is really more dark type, and he can spew pithy dialogue that had me simultaneously entertained and in utter awe. But he cannot write this girl, her story, and expect us to stand around shamed as though he is the one who has drawn back the curtain on sin. He simply does not know what he's talking about. Here is a review that sums it up. Don't read it though if you are going to try the book for yourself first.
