* I have heard fantastic things about the serialized "Series of Unfortunate Events" and have it queued, although, obviously I will have to watch it solo. I don't think I've yet gotten over my thunderstruck feeling about Carrey's Olaf. OMFG. I will admit to my bizarre fetish in which I want to hit that character in all his stripey trousers, goat-eed, eyebrowed glory. YES, PLEASE. It's kinda fun to see Hall using that as a derivative jumping off point.

* Taboo this week! Zilpha is still not working for me as hard as I've tried. I'm just not feeling her coldness or that crazy wild-eyed thing the actress keeps doing. That makes me sad because I'm ready for the incest. Bring it! Hardy is working overtime to instill the relationship with so much crackling energy...and it's just getting strangely deflected. Her best scene yet was solo???? And now the widow is involved. It's good stuff. The writing! Atticus is my favourite because of course he is with his map tattoo!

* Also, out of sheer desperation because I've been reading a ton of fairy and folk tales and one can't live on books alone in these modern small screen times...I have been watching...wait for it....Grimm and Once Upon a Time. I have had a rotting soft spot for Grimm since it began. Yep, I was there from the begining and I put up with another non-sparking relationship between Nick and Juliet because Monroe!!! And Monroe/Rosalie and Adalind/everyone. And mainly because of the quotes in the opening credits. THOSE QUOTES!!! I could use them for prompts for writing for the rest of my days and have material enough for stories untold. They are wonderful! Season 5 was a glorious payoff for those of us who stuck with the silliness and Season 6 is turning out to be okay, so all is good with that. Now with OUaT, completely different experience. I wanted to love it. I sat through the first season when it aired...and I hated it. It was the most cringey thing I had just about ever seen and I just finally had to give up on it. Ugh. A funny thing happened a few weeks ago. It came up in my Netflix recs....and I thought, huh. It is pretty with pretty people and I thought I'll try it again. Boy howdy, the trick to OUaT is binge-watching!!! This show!!! Is insanely good! And not wincey at all! How could I ever have thought that? As a matter of fact, I think it's really brave and the cast is really brave and the show is working for me when I don't have a week to think about how not fairytale-ish it is. It's a modern fairytale about family. The mother/daughter relationships most especially! I really think if you tried and gave up or haven't tried at all, this is a show to queue.

* Now I am sad that the LJ Of Olde is gone because it would be fun to meta and drabble and fic these three shows!

I missed this vid when Nick released it -

I wanted so much to like OUaT, but I couldn't even get through the first episode. The only character I liked was Rumplestiltskin, everyone else was just cringey. Especially the heroine whats-her-name. And that little boy with the book--GAH! So much potential wasted with so much irritation.
Feb. 3rd, 2017 04:16 pm (UTC)
I had the same experience my first time...although it was Rumplestiltskin who was giving me fits! I agree...it's far from perfect but going down much smoother for me with a binge!

What would be a potential in this genre not wasted? That will be today's LJ post!

Never got into either series. Not big on fairy tales, I guess. Maybe I need to challenge myself to write one...what would a contemporary fairy tale look like? Once upon a time there was a nudist colony on the brink of bankruptcy...

Evil grin

Cave creates the most soothing sounds with the most disturbing lyrics. Moving.

Hahahaha! Yes, we should do a fairy tale challenge! I love fairytales above and beyond all genres. You don't care for any, M?

Cave is the king of disturbing lyrics. Ellis Warren creates beautiful music. They are an unique match!

I expect I must have enjoyed them as a child, though I really don't remember. I do think that writing a fairy tale should be an Idol challenge. We have a contestant who often writes alternatives to fairy tales.

Watch both "Grimm" and "Once Upon A Time" but lost my love for both shows got awhile ago. I'm honestly glad it's "Grimm's" last season and keep hoping OUaT will be done this season, too. I'm managing to hang in a little longer with "Grimm." I've been able to keep up with this season while I haven't watched any of this season of OUaT. I'm disturbed by the handwaving of rape on both shows. I find the rapemance on "Grimm" hard to take and OUaT just is obsessed with all the wrong characters and couples for me.

Feb. 3rd, 2017 02:44 pm (UTC)
The rapemance is what made me nope out of Grimm too, and the obsession with Emma and Snow/Charming was a major factor in me quitting OUAT after one season because they were the parts I hated most.
Feb. 19th, 2017 05:04 pm (UTC)
I feel the opposite about OUaT. Emma, the Charmings, and that family are my favorite parts.

You'd be happy to know that while Emma is still the lead, the Charmings barely get any focus after the first season and Regina basically takes over the show.

Feb. 19th, 2017 05:31 pm (UTC)
Last episode I saw was all about Emma's special magic powers and Snow's goddamn pregnancy; I was there for other reasons but wading through more Charming bloodline stuff made me glad I quit when I did. Regina interested me, just not enough to suffer through the usually Het True Love + Babies esp Charming Babies that seemed to be at its core *shrug*
Feb. 19th, 2017 07:06 pm (UTC)
I think that was during the third season and the pregnancy was written in because the actress was pregnant. I don't remember that storyline taking over the show (in fact thinking it got shunted to the side for more Regina hour - as you can probably tell, I detest the character of Regina.) Usually by that point, and especially now, Snow and Charming get a few episodes a season dedicated to them and that's it. Emma is still the lead though and was always intended to be.

But, yeah, if you're not a fan of true love stuff - especially between straight pairings - then this show definitely wouldn't be for you. It's basically a show about fairytales so romance will always be at its core, even if the show doesn't write it particularly well.

You and meridian_rose have given me a lot to think about, S.

What rape is in OUaT?
Feb. 3rd, 2017 07:51 pm (UTC)
The rape of Graham by Regina that was laughed off by the show runners as her havng, and I quote, "A boy toy" and (SPOILERS) the rape of Robin by Zelena who was in disguise as Marian. Go this show I swear...
Feb. 19th, 2017 05:07 pm (UTC)
Yeah, as spotzle explained, there's basically too many rapes to choose from on OUaT and the writers still haven't figured out why a lot of viewers find that problematic.

Feb. 3rd, 2017 02:43 pm (UTC)
I used to really enjoy Grimm and was all about the Monroe side of things and sassy Sgt Woo, and watched for a long time. But I quit when Juliet became (literally) demonised, another female got offed, and another female character did not get punished for what I firmly believe was rape but instead used her rape-fetus (she never could use birth control) as leverage to move in with the male character she raped. The producers had a hard-on for a particular female and het ship and would destroy anything that stood in their way and I was done. (see also Sleepy Hollow which started out strong and was assassinated by shitty production decisions)

I watched the first season of OUAT but I felt they overstretched the boundaries they'd set themselves in the first season going foward from that. I never liked Emma and the anti-adoption narrative she represented, nor Snow/Charming, and all the characters I did like and plots I was interested in were put aside for those :/
I've occasionally watched episodes since for guest stars and I've never been "wow what am I missing" so much as "they're still pulling this Emma is the Mother and Saviour bs?" :P

I'm all for fairy tales and twisting tropes though :)
Feb. 3rd, 2017 06:50 pm (UTC)
I never liked Emma and the anti-adoption narrative she represented

Yes, yes, a thousand times yes. Why in the seven hells would Emma give up her entire life on the word of some kid she's never seen? And why is she such a better mother than the woman who'd been taking care of him for so long?

Oh, that's right. Women need children to be happy and a childfree life is an unfulfilled one. *rolleyes*

They way over-eviled the Evil Stepmother to make that point, too.

These are issues I never considered, L! I must really be out of it, culturally speaking! I thought Juliet was demonized because of the utter lack of chemistry between the two actors...but yes, I can see what you're saying here. Now that you've pointed it out. Hmmmm...

Also, hadn't considered the adoption aspect of OUaT. The first season is difficult to put up with, I agree. For the other reasons you've stated. I actually have grown to like the idea of Emma as both Maiden and Mother. I like the idea of a female savior, especially when they begin naming her that!

I too am considering watching series of unfortunate events.

Ooh, yes GRIMM and OUAT, I absolutely loved the first three seasons of both and then stopped watching for some reason, keep meaning to go back and watch the rest. And YES MONROE IS EVERYTHING.
Feb. 3rd, 2017 05:29 pm (UTC)
Monroe!!! Did you see Silas in Prison Break? I just love him! I really think S5 of Grimm is very, very worthwhile!

Let's watch SoUE together!
Feb. 4th, 2017 08:21 am (UTC)
I just realised just now reading this that he was in prison break. I watched that show a very long time ago. Ooh, I'll have to check out seasons 4 and 5 then.

Yes, let's!
Feb. 19th, 2017 05:32 pm (UTC)
Silas is awesome in prison break. He can do creepy really well as I saw in some guest spot somewhere too. Monroe is such a ray of sunshine by comparison to his other roles :)

*ears perk up*

Ohhhhh OUAT... The bane of my existence! I love it and I hate it both. What season are you on because it gets.... it gets maddening.

If you need any Rumbelle fic recs I can get you set up with the best shit. Consider me your personal dealer in these parts. We gots allllllll the fic. And art, too, which is amazing. I've never been in a fandom before that had *art* before. Good stuff.

Feb. 3rd, 2017 07:49 pm (UTC)
Also, I'm loving ASOUE.
Feb. 4th, 2017 06:57 pm (UTC)
I KNEW there was an OUAT fangrrl on the flist! It does have that love/hate thing going on! I just started S2. I think..it is always maddening. That seems to be one of the motifs of the writing approach.

There are so many fics on A03 it's really hard to know where to jump in. Your recs are always spot on...so if you have any early series recs, I would be all over them!
Feb. 4th, 2017 08:17 pm (UTC)
Well, I have a ton of Rumbelle recs of course, which I understand is not quite your thing, but I can recommend a few authors and some specific fics to get you started and if you like them I have a ton more. Seriously. I'm helping to run a fandom awards event literally right now (voting ends tonight) and it's in its fifth year. My subsection of the OUAT fandom as a whole has a billionty stories that range from sweet to holy *fuck* plus a whole bunch of crossovers that would make you go crosseyed.

I do want to give you a fair warning that right around the second half of season 2 the show completely derails and goes to plaid. I don't even watch anymore, I just keep up with the fandom.

Author recs - note all of these writers have AO3 accounts, but not all of their fics are housed there. Definitely browse their masterlists for some fun goodies - PLUS some of them have rec lists so if you like what they write you'll probably like what they read:

Rufeepeach (link to AO3 on her page), who is a brilliant writer (one of my favorites) with a range from utterly romantic to heartbreaking and sometimes it's all in one, which is the best of both worlds. For you I would recommend Inheritance which is a non-magic AU, but it's finished (thank god!) and it doesn't require having watched six seasons of the show. I would also recommend Burning Bright, but that does have spoilers so YMMV.

The Marchionessofblackadder hasn't written for Once since 2014 so there won't be many spoilers for you. The drawback to that is a minefield of unfinished WIP so tread carefully and check the chapter counts because she's addicting. (her zombie story is especially good, but NOT FINISHED which is a crying shame). Anyway, she's a beautiful writer.

A Muse of Fyre. She also doesn't write for Once anymore (she now writes actual books with paper and is published!), but I think you will like pretty much everything she writes.

Straggletag. One of my favorite writers ever. Specializes in long-ass oneshots, but she also wrote what is considered the bar for Rumbelle AUs and it holds up years later (Starbucks series if you're wondering). A lot of AUs (her Addams Family crossover is my favorite and there's an adorable remix of it. Both are still unfinished though - she does update them, but slowly. Again, YMMV.)

Standbyyourmantis. One of the most popular writers in our fandom and for good reason. Also, she updates constantly. You won't find a dangling WIP anywhere. I think you would really like Any Port in a Storm (which now has a sequel).

Forget Me Not Which is one of my favorite stories in the world. Roberre doesn't write anymore, but this story hold true to this day. Only read after you reach episode 2-19, but please read it. If you read nothing else on my list, read THIS ONE.

I'm also going to throw in A Bed of Thorns which is the Rumbelle epic fic of epicness. It's a WIP, but Nym updates still. It's been ongoing since 2012 and it's a twist on Skin Deep (he marries Belle instead of asking her to be his maid). Slow burn, character study, tons of sex, lots of beautiful prose (at over 700K words I'm not even close to exaggerating about that). This is *the* standard setting story for most of us. You won't be spoiled for any of the upcoming seasons.

I think that'll get you started. Please let me know if you like anything you've read. And if you leave feedback for the writers tell them Sluggy sent you (well except for Fyre and the marchioness, they have no idea who I am. The rest do, though;))

(There are a few stories that are ensemble pieces, but very spoilery so I hesitate to rec them. Let me know if you want them anyway)

i am in full agreement with you about zilpha! (also, now i know her name. :D ) HOW CAN SHE NOT HAVE CHEMISTRY WITH TOM HARDY?? but she doesn't. i definitely feel the darkness and the weirdness in the relationship, but only from his side. i don't get it from her. which is so disappointing! is she not a good actress? a good actress but totally wrong for this particular role? is it the directing? what??

i watched grimm for i think a couple seasons, but after a while the only characters i cared about were monroe and rosalie and wu, and that just wasn't enough. and honestly the only thing that interests me about ouat is sebastian stan as the mad hatter. (haven't seen any of his episodes yet. keep meaning to, keep not.)
Feb. 4th, 2017 04:15 am (UTC)
HOW CAN SHE NOT?????????? I don't get it. And I want to understand...I think she's not a good actress and she isn't exuding any kind of sensuality. He is walking, talking sensuality. It's strange and too bad. I'm hoping that it's directorial? Perhaps intentional? He has chemistry with every single other actor. I can actually see James/Brace or James/Atticus.

OMG!!! THAT IS YOUR SEBASTIAN?????????????????? Hahahaha, omg, C, I didn't realize that...I mean I thought, huh, strangely attractive, fantastic acting...moving portrayal of tortured character...but I've never seen this guy before? Shows how out of touch I am. Yes, you should watch it for Jefferson!
