why the oroville dam will not collapse

* So, this crazy, crazy thing is happening down the road and I'm stunned it's not getting more national/international coverage. We are all on tenterhooks!

Oroville Dam Spillway Failure

Remember that New Year's hike I took? Well...that's the dam. And the spillways. Sadly, I don't think I'll be hiking over there for at least a decade's time. The repairs to the spillway are going to top 1 billion and could take upwards of ten years. The dam road is closed now and I can't imagine it opening with construction going on. I do NOT think the dam is going to fail...but the current situation is already a disaster and the emergency spillway is going to cause untold ecological damage. The poor baby Chinooks!!!

* Not 100% about my Idol entry this week. I ended up NOT going with my dark idea but rather trying to add to my novel WIP....I haven't committed to it entirely yet. I'm still tweaking and stepping back and tweaking and stepping back. It looks different in different lighting. I need to reach down deep inside of my lazy bones and START WRITING.

* Growing one's fringe out is an exercise in fashion futility. Ugh. Not sure it's worth the frustration.

* OMG, Taboo!!! Just slayed it this week. Like this show got sit-up-and-pay-attention interesting!! Tom Hollander is stealing this show!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This melding is fantabulous stuff -

OK, here it goes. It was unavoidable. WIP is just one letter removed from wimp (humor on vacation), so PLEASE commit to your novel. You are a marvelous writer, with an unusual and captivating style. So, push push push. Don't let little things like the impending collapse of the dam slow you down.

Thank you for that link about the Oroville Dam, I had seen something about it briefly but hadn't been able to find more coverage. The picture near the bottom of the page of men in the hole (and dwarfed by it) is just astonishing. I hope you and all of yours stay safe.

I haven't had the news on yet, today. A friend called before noon and we just hung up. We do this every few month or so. Our record was five hours. But your dam! The pictures you linked to the green room, scary! What are Chinooks? I know what they are here, but what are they where you are?

And I am with rayaso again. If your entry this week is any indication of what your novel will be -- Write it! I want to read it! There's a little Jacob and Esau in there too, I think.

It definitely sucks about the dam, though I'm glad to know it's not going to burst even if they have to use the emergency spillway all winter - still, what a mess for all concerned, from the baby Chinooks right up to the Governor.

I suppose it's not getting more coverage because it's nobody's fault, it's not regarded as a threat to human life, and there's not a thing to be done about it that's not already being done. It's important, but it's not controversial - apparently there's no negligence to be outraged about; just water and gravity doing their special thing over time, out of sight. There's no particular danger to be worried about, or people being evacuated just in case. There's no question that it has to be repaired ASAP, and no point in those of us who aren't dam engineers holding opinions about the repair plans. It'll cost a shit-ton of money at an unfavorable time, but there's nothing to be done about that either.

*hugs hugs* Hang in there, hon; Spring is coming as fast as she can! *insert appropriate noises off*

Oh, holy shit, I just saw this:

... Are you okay? Are you evacuating your house? Sheesh, scary news. *hugs hugs*

*hugs* Thank you, hon! Yes, we are okay. Things are CRAZY here! We are back home now on our HIGH mountain. It sounds as though the lake folks have gotten this under temporary control and the immediate threat is over.

I will post about it in the morning!

I totally appreciate you checking in!

Very glad you're all right! Sheesh, I've been watching the videos; what an awful mess - all those poor folk having to evacuate like that. At least so far it doesn't sound like anyone's been hurt; that's something. Hope your night is calm and restful!
