wake to the sound of morning rain

* Season 1, Episode 4 of Legion just absolutely positively knocked me senseless and now this Show has elevated itself into the upper echelon of my personal rankings of superior small screen offerings. THIS SHOW. It's been astonishing from the beginning. The casting, the acting, the directing, the cinematography, and the sets. It just looks exquisitely expensive and intensely well-crafted. But it's been the writing that has had me flabbergasted. Think Inception but with more intrigue, more relatability. And I know, that seems strange, this is a show about mutants...but that archetype has always been about the things that make us unique that we hide inside ourselves. Episode 4 opens with a *genuflect* appearance by a most-beloved cult actor ( kittytoes if you aren't watching Legion, you should be, and prepare for a full-blown swoon when Epi 4 begins!!! If you don't already know, don't spoil yourself! ) and he just ACES this role!! I was literally hyperventilating with joy.

But what is really, really special about this show is how complicated the storyline is. It's really dense and layered and full of magical realism. Maybe I give too much of my own childhood trauma and fear away, but I GET this show. Entirely.

Oh, and Dan Stevens.

* I've begun the laborious but newdayjoy work of submitting. Keeping my fingers crossed.

* What has LJ done with this new comment feature???

Not to my typical taste in male voices, but the music is gorgeous and his tone so imploring -

Ooh now I want to watch this show, it's added to the list.

I ended up going back and watching the recent series of vampire diaries and I enjoyed it (I think at this point I have to just accept that trash is a thing I enjoy, though I do feel as though they're really pulling out the stops for the final season).

Good luck with submissions.

I think you will really like it, J!

I have considered a rewatch of The Vampire Diaries and The Originals...but then when I re-remember all the reasons I wandered away...I just can't get into the mood. Glad to hear the final season may end up being worthwhile!

I watched ep four last night, I believe ep five airs tonight. Last night's ep, at times it was deja vous all over again for me, cough Twin Peaks cough, but so much better. As you say this series looks expensive, no polished. Dan is amazing. His "girlfriend" is a gift to tv--I don't know who she is, but she is brilliant. Jean Smart is also highly watchable.

Thank you so much for your rec.

Also watched the last three eps of Taboo. Oh E! I get it! I love it! I wish I had figured out that I could watch it ages ago. I missed so much. The cast! The acting! I was mesmerized. I'm going to phone my cable co. and find out if I can watch it on demand from the beginning.

Another rec from you I have to thank you for--thank you!

I haven't seen Twin Peaks! Is that worth queueing? I have avoided it because I know it was cancelled...and I hate that.

I'm glad you're digging Legion! I'm swooning over the writing but yes, all those actors are a gift to the small screen.

TABOO!!!! I know it, M! Why aren't more people just losing their minds over this show????

Twin Peaks was phenomenal, sensational when it came out, but with what we get on TV today I think it might be quite dated. I don't know if I would watch it again, today. The final episode was a bit trippy, but after watching the full series again, it made a weird kind of sense. I also hate watching shows that were cancelled, but then there was Firefly, a series I love completely, and I didn't even start watching it until long after it was cancelled.

Legion reminds me of the British series The Prisoner and Twin Peaks (but since making the connection re: The Prisoner not so much Twin Peaks.)

There are two reasons perhaps Taboo isn't getting the reception it deserves, a) costume drama, some folks just don't like that kind of thing and b) slavery, it is not a comfortable subject for...well anyone really. But in the way Penny Dreadful is dark and kind of dangerous, so is Taboo. It is also visually gorgeous, and yes, the writing is wonderful, exceptional.

While I am not sure about Twin Peaks, I would rec The Prisoner.

legion is just so weird to me, but such a pleasure to watch. my eyeballs really enjoy it. i've never seen dan stevens in anything else, and while i like him, i think i like syd better. there's just something about her i like. and the memory guy who never forgets anything, what a terrifying superpower.

what did lj do this time? commenting hasn't seemed any different to me.

You didn't watch Downton Abbey??? Are you like the only human on earth who can say that??? And he's going to be in Beauty and the Beast this month!

I love the memory guy! And the creepy blind eye guy! But for me it's all about David and now Oliver!! Syd isn't hitting any high notes for me yet.

Do you see the comment bar on your flist feed??? It's weird!
