Dogs just went NUTS barking and dashing off into the woods. Then the entire neighborhood of dogs went crazy nuts. And then my neighbor called to tell me that my dogs were chasing the biggest black bear she's ever seen across her yard and up the road. This is NOT good because Little Dog thinks he's a Russian Bear Hound but he's just a little dog. It's nearly impossible to keep him inside 24/7....but I think I'm going to have to because right now the bears up here are out of control. Here's another neighbor's game cam -

I won't share the next one because it's AWFUL. The bear got a goat. *cries*

Remember when Z was just a teensy little baby dog???

I didn't know bears ate goats. The ones around here are mostly interested in bird feeders. Ours also aren't quite so big. O_o

Such pretty dogs. Don't go after bears, pretty dogs.

They shouldn't be eating goats. That's major predatory behavior and very, very concerning.

That is terrifying! Could you fence part of your yard to keep it dog-safe, like a run for them to be in without dashing off outside of your property? I'd never want any of my pets to be able to get far from me :/

Such great pics though!
Gorgeous dogs!

Heya, L! It is terrifying and this is a bear problem that needs to be dealt with. Predatory behavior and that is very concerning.

I am really working on keeping the dogs right here by the house. Z will stay. Des is another matter entirely.

Clearly that bear thinks he weighs a lot less than he does. Sad because he got caught.

Love the puppy photos!

Little dogs have enormous...egos? No...attitudes.

I remember when Z was a baby!

Hope puppies are okay.

Dogs are good. I'm working on keeping them around the house. Z stays, Desmond is the issue.

That bear climbing the fence is not the chased bear. But the climbing bear is a serious concern. Grabbing a goat and taking it away is serious predatory stuff and that doesn't bode well with civilization. I wonder what Fish & Game will say...

Our only critter problems rank on the order of raccoons, and since our cat is a coward there is no chance of any confrontation. Bears are a whole 'nother order of danger, especially ones who climb fences and eat goats. I hope your dogs remain safe and the danger passes.

Thanks, G. I need to keep the little dog here and that will solve the problem. That bear is a serious threat...and that is not normal bear behavior. Maybe it's this crazy heat?

Yoooooooooooooooooo bear! Shawn and I sat here stunned because that is a big bear. (and Shawn says your neighbors have a very well put together fence. Too bad goat proof isn't bear proof.)
Jun. 21st, 2017 02:48 pm (UTC)
Right?! And climbing a fence and grabbing a goat and dragging it back over??? Not normal bear behavior. This guy is a problem.

I hope they come home safely and soon!!!

Home safe and sound. But the trick is keeping the little dog here! Z will stay...but Desmond thinks it's his job to patrol the property.

Aww, such cuties!

Thanks, S! Keeping them by the house is my new job!

Woah, that is a big bear! Very sorry to hear about the goat. Your dogs are lovely; hope they stay safe!

Happy Solstice, by the way, and have you read Summerlong by Peter S. Beagle?
Jun. 21st, 2017 03:19 pm (UTC)
Happy Solstice, dearheart! Are you recommending that book? I will go look it up!

Yeah, a predatory bear that size is a problem for a village our size. Not sure what Fish & Game will have to say when they see the pictures.

My God, that bear is huge!

Yes, I remember when the baby was a baby.

Baby Z!!! And how are your furbabies???

Oh, geez. That bear was far too clever in getting over that fence.

This is an excellent reason to keep the dogs inside. Yikes. :(
Jun. 21st, 2017 03:16 pm (UTC)
THAT BEAR!!!! It's a stunning and terrible thing. Predatory bears are very dangerous!
Jun. 21st, 2017 08:41 am (UTC)
That bear climbing the fence is hilarious! They are so agile!

Stay safe, you and the dogs. I know they look so fluffy but are so dangerous. Sorry about the goat. I guess it happens, so close to nature....
Jun. 21st, 2017 03:15 pm (UTC)
Trying to keep the dogs close. It's hard without a fence.

A bear climbing a fence to snag a goat and then drag it off is not normal bear behavior. It's so predatory and is very concerning. I'm going to be interested to hear what Fish & Game think....
Jun. 21st, 2017 02:41 pm (UTC)
holy crap that bear is climbing the fence. O.O stay safe, little dog!

puppy z is so cute i just made a noise of squee so high-pitched only, uh, dogs can hear. :D adult z is very pretty, tho, and so fluffy! but still, no match for a big bear.
Jun. 21st, 2017 03:02 pm (UTC)
That bear is DANGEROUS. That is not normal bear behavior and this is predatory stuff that needs to be dealt with. EEK!

Puppy Z was such a floof! But yes, both dogs need to stay right here up by the house now.
