my bones will turn to ash before i am done

* Week 31 of therealljidol and one person will be voted out of the current field of four! Introspectively, this season has been about gritty realism for me. I'm sure that has much to do with my "RL" situation, my father's illness, my mother's depression, and my roller coaster experience of family life over the past year. I've tried to write more lyrical mythos...and have occassionaly succeeded, but my Muse is more of a slice-of-life bend currently. I've found myself taking the smallest of experiences that are relayed to me in a normal conversation and expanding on them. I would not say it's been cathartic.

The polls are up. Four entries, all worth your time. Thanks in advance for clicking through and reading, commenting, voting -

The Real LJ Idol Poll

* I am fascinated by this - Transplant patients hold old hearts in their hands.

* Oh, fandom, where have ye gone? Westworld is something AMAZING. We're in deep now, the kind of deep where you want to mainline an entire season in one evening. It's so freakin' good. Intelligent, gorgeously set and costumed and filmed, beautifully written dialogue, and an intriguing story that keeps the synapses firing. There's not a single scene that doesn't captivate. Stellar cast and the lesser knowns are rising to the level of the cream represented by Anthony Hopkins and Ed Harris. Jimmi Simpson and Evan Rachel Wood are exemplary. The pathos that Wood is managing to evoke is impressive stuff.

* I began IT because I couldn't help myself. We've got a strong handful of flisters who want to read and discuss it together. I think October is a good month to get the shivers, so that's the plan. I'm taking copious notes and am so impressed with King. He is a master storyteller and his strengths are details and plot weaving. I do believe that IT is one of his finest works and I'm looking forward to group convos about what makes it so fine. Important to note - not as scary as an adult. ;)

* I had a dream a few weeks back about sculpting. Some of the flisters aren't aware that I sculpted throughout my 30's. I gave it up when we moved here, burnt out, and hung out my photography shingle. Then I took a sabattical from that to write the novella. Anyway, I woke up from this dream in which I was showing some incredible piece of ceramic art. Although I don't know what that art was. However, it nagged at me all day and into the next and then I decided, hey I want to try my hand at clay again. So I googled anything that might be local and omen-like there is a new ceramic studio down in the valley and they had a sculpture class listed which started this week! I signed up and first class was Tuesday. It's not figurative which makes me sad, but it is clay and kilns and omg so wonderful to be back in it. I had to cut all my gorgeous long nails which stung for half a second, but I considered it a sacrifice of another self to the clay gods. We shall see....

* The Originals has music just as good if not sometimes better than The Vampire Diaries -

Sculpting, yay!! :D

Looking forward to the reread of "It" -- Kira's not interested in the film, so I have a date to see it with several friends next week.

I agree that it's one of King's finest works -- he has such a deft hand with dialogue and realism, especially when writing about children. The scenes in the past are so fully immersive that I feel like I lived through part of that era.

(Which is why, IMO, "Stand By Me" is the best King-based film -- it's the one that most truly captured that vision.)

Do you still sculpt, A? What medium is your fave? I have some oven-drying clay that I haven't opened....not sure why.

Yay for IT!! I think I'm going to catch the film this weekend with the kids...I'm going to be alone all weekend...so I'm not certain sure it's the best idea, but hell.

He has a skill and a gift for writing misfit children. Absolutely. And I know what you mean by that idea that their experiences are yours.

I agree. Stand By Me is the best King film. Did you see they are making Gerald's Game???? What about the Myst series?

I haven't done much sculpting for a while, although I do periodically break out the Apoxie Sculpt for mods.

I have an ambitious project in mind -- shelling my avatar in doll form -- but I'm considering teaching myself to use ZBrush and 3D-print the base sculpt, to make sure it fits on the neck properly.

I've heard mixed things about "The Mist," haven't seen it yet.

I was FURIOUS about the film (they were so faithful to the story throughout, and then slapped on a horrible "twist" ending that I found to be incredibly upsetting.

I had not heard about Gerald's Game, that should be interesting...

Hope you enjoy the sculpting class!

PS - Stand By Me is basically my favorite movie (it's kind of tied with The Breakfast Club) so I'd agree it's the best King movie.

It really is a great movie. (And so is The Breakfast Club!) Have you read the novella?

Yeah, I've read it. I own the book. I've read each of the stories except for the last one (the only one that wasn't adapted into a movie.)

You have the most wonderful dreams. And you find the most wonderful music.

Started IT a few days ago, but then got busy. Will restart on Sunday. I'm really excited to be reading it with you, and every one else.

Your writing this (Idol) season has been fantastic! Truly phenomenal.

This tune comes courtesy of The Originals which has some amazing music!

You know how addictive King is, I can't put IT down even when I've tried!! I think it will be a blast to discuss. Definitely a different experience decades later....

Thanks, M. I'm wondering if this will be my last week...

I love the way King writes kids. One of my faves is The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon. (Having a challenging day because of pain, so I may just spend it reading.)

Hugs--I can't imagine how it feels to be this close to the finals, E. If I had my druthers....

I hope you do well in Idol. I feel increasingly disconnected, unable to truly enjoy or relate to the entries but I'll still vote to the end :)

Sculpting! I did not know that. You're creative in so many fields :)

Thanks, L! I get that, I totally get that. I feel disconnected from my own work....and at this point all the entries feel stale to me. Predictable. But it's been a good year of writing for me and I'm beholden. I would like to get back into fanfic,t hough.

If I could share some pix, I would! But fuck photobucket!!

:/ You have done a lot of work though, absolutely, lots of good stuff.

Yes, still annoyed at pb. I know many people are using imgur. Some have gone to Flickr or using their Google Photos or Amazon if they have accounts with those. I'm mostly using Cloudinary. LJ still has photo albums I think :) Options if you later want to share :)

i've really been enjoying your idol entries! i like the more lyrical, mythic stuff - altho there's always a part of me that thinks you're trying to say something i'm just not getting - but the more realist pieces always have such a strong voice, and the relationships in them are so clear and varied.

have you mentioned before that you used to sculpt? because it sounds familiar. in any case, the class sounds pretty fabulous.
