into the dust

* It finally has gotten cold enough for the snow to stick and all the flurries we had the past few days - beautiful - have created a winter wonderland this morning. We're having a cold freeze but not sure how long this will last. Old Man Winter has been sleeping somewhere far north of here this year.

* TV. I'm able to watch The Olympics when I'm at my parent's house. We don't get it here. I adore The Olympics! And this year has been wonderful. Nathan Chen and the Shibutani's! The snowboarder who took the GS! Fun stuff. I do miss the human interest spots and I think NBC has done an abysmal job covering the games. The Frankenstein Chronicles is starting slow. Too slow for D, but I think I will watch it when I get some alone time. Any show that has Blake's deathbed? And Mary? That's interesting! Romantic Outlaws. We need more early 19th Century entertainment! We're late to this party, but Luther is wonderful albeit far-fetched. The Ritual couldn't sustain itself but wow it boasts one of the most frightening scenes I've ever been subjected to by a movie.

* Yearning for a GREAT British novel...but am not finding much.

* The new boundaries of my finite life are defined by my father's death.

We just finished The Frankenstein Chronicles! It does speed up, but there are many layers to the story which contributes to the gradual unfolding of events. Ada Lovelace also makes an appearance. I have a theory about another character solely because of his name...

But yes, watch it! We can compare notes! The casting is terrific, especially Sean Bean.

Finally saw the end on Sunday night!

I enjoyed the series quite a bit, although the violence level was occasionally a bit higher than my tolerance. I'm never a big fan of watching people get *hurt*, but the story was compelling enough that I didn't let it put me off.

I'm going to have to check out the books that the series was based on, because they had so many interesting ideas about transhumanism, the permanence of the soul/personality, and the idea of bodies being virtually interchangeable (but a clearly-expressed point that it was very different for the rich than for the poor, especially that heartbreaking child brought back in an adult's body in the first episode.)

There were a few things about the ending that I would have changed (I would have liked to see T stay, rather than giving the body back to R), but I thought it had a satisfying wrap-up.

LOVED the casting, the diversity, the talented acting by a number of people (especially the guy who played the thug/Abuela/Dimi, who really did a great job portraying three personalities in one skin), and the worldbuilding.

Thoughts! I want to hear yours! :D

*high five*

I liked it. A lot! But...it had some flaws which were so frustrating to me. The backstory episode just dragged and I enjoyed the mystery far more than the explanation.

And, like you, I was mesmerized by the IDEAS of the show and would love to see more of that explored. Tricky tricky stuff and yet it really worked! I would have liked to see Takeshi and Kristin explore the idea of new love and allowing dead lovers to stay dead...out of a spirituality? Or I don't know, something more daring...and difficult. I felt that was an easy and pat ending.

But overall, bravo Netflix! This one was out of the park and I'm so thrilled to be present in these modern TV times.

I agree, the backstory episode wasn't my favorite.

The explanation being somewhat beside the point worked okay for me, in part because the larger story was more interesting. The killing was something of a Macguffin, it served to start the plot rolling, but became less important than the interactions between the characters.

The IDEAS of the show were fantastic, and I think that they largely played them out well.

I also would have liked to see T and K put their ghosts to rest together -- OTOH, R was killed/imprisoned/disembodied unjustly, so I would have been OK seeing them give the cloned body to him.

But, yes!! Good stuff, and it makes you THINK, and I'm glad I watched it with Matt, because he has a lot of interesting ideas about transhumanism, so it sparked some great conversations.

It really was a great spark for convos! And to me, that's a mark of "good art".

And I forgot to mention that I agree with you completely about the "thug" actor!!!

Hugs, my dear.

I'm not a big sports fan. I have tried and failed to watch this year's Olympics, Philistine that I am. Been reading, and thinking about my appeal. Just sent off for reports of my last two eligibility interviews, and records of falls on buses that I reported. Don't really need these things, but I can mention them in my appeal.

We've had all the snow! You want it? I was just out knocking it off my tarps so when the melt comes it isn't all over my stuff. Love Zoltan in the snow. He's such a beauty. He could be in movies.

I have been trying to post every day, but I have forgotten a few times. Off to post now.

Hahaha send that snow! We woke up to another winter wonderland this morning, but it's melting fast. Snow predicted all week, so that's good. Really don't want another drought.

I tried and couldn't do it, M. You've been far more disciplined than I!

Well, they're worried here about flooding because we've had so much snow. Funny how that works. Either you get too much or you don't get enough.

Today, I have both windows open, letting in as much of the fresh stuff as I can take because the weather could change again. They're calling for snow again at the end of the week.

For me, I thought the challenge seemed doable and also might help me to prep for Idol, though I'm not sure I will be able to do it this time around. I was going through old daytimers to find dates for the info I'm requesting, and the last two years there's nothing written in them at all--all my energy was used up doing Idol. I loved it. I loved writing like that and all the wonderful feedback, but I just don't know. If mini-seasons were truly mini, say for six weeks or even two months, I'd do it...but.

I had hoped to see much more of the Olympic ice-skating, but we didn't record it after the first men's competition, and forgot to watch in the evenings, so... :( :(

I'm glad you're enjoying Luther! It's a captivating series (really, it's all about broody Idris Elba in tweed, for me), and there are a number of interesting characters. Still much easier to follow if you turn on English subtitles, thanks to typical European micing, where all background noises are louder than the dialogue.
